Broome In Bloom! Laja Season 💐
Broome is totally in BLOOM at the moment in Laja Season. As we drive around town we can see the flamboyant explosion of life happening before our eyes. Gubinge are flowering madly, trees have lost their leaves giving way to bright new lime green foliage, mangos are almost ripe, poincianas in bright orange look like flames as they bloom, and cassias in their beautiful golden flower. The heat pushes this life force through to everything we see. It's an amazing spectacle! We have nature so on our doorstep here in the tropical Kimberley.
Most visitors have left town now after the peak of the dry has passed. Now there are car spaces galore and the delicious wet season heat builds. Lots of pool time, gatherings under the shade of the tall town beach rain trees (Samanea saman) as the hot breezes blow. 🌳

🥭️ What is Laja Season? 🥭️
Laja is a season of Yawuru - it's the hot time from late September to November
The Yawuru people, are the Traditional Owners of Roebuck Bay. For thousands of years our ancestors lived along the foreshores of Roebuck Bay, across the pindan plains, as far inland as the Walan-garr, the Edgar Ranges, and along the fringes of the Great Sandy Desert. Our country is land and sea, moulded by the cycle of seasonal change. We live by six seasons, reading the changing signs and temperature, to know when and where we should go to harvest the riches of our country.
Building up to the wet, winds strengthen from westerly to north-westerly. It is a good time for collecting and eating girrbaju (bush honey). Birndany (stingray), reef fish and shellfish are fat. Girlibil (turtles) are mating and nganarr (dugong) are calving. Towards the end of Laja, people would build manggaja (paperbark shelters) in readiness for the coming of the rains.
