Midgie Magic | Natural Bite Relief Cream
In the late 1990s, we developed a humble little remedy for midge bites. Back then, it was called Sandfly Salve — a name knew among locals, campers, and backpackers who passed through Broometown and swore by its soothing magic. As our range grew and the feedback poured in, we gave it a new name to match its reputation: Midgie Magic.
Lovingly Hand Crafted by Hidden Valley Broome, this bite balm has been trusted for over 30 years and is still handmade the traditional way — with heart, herbs, and a whole lot of know-how.
Midgie Magic draws on the wisdom of herbal medicine and bush apothecary traditions, blending time-tested plants known for their soothing and skin-healing properties.
Inside each jar you’ll find a little bit of magic:
Calendula – for skin repair and inflammation
Plantain – a traditional bush herb that draws and calms
Lavender & Chamomile – to reduce redness and promote healing
Aloe Vera – for cooling and comfort
Kunzea (Tick Bush) – a uniquely Australian oil known for its powerful anti-inflammatory and antibacterial benefits
These ingredients work in harmony to reduce itchiness, disinfect the bite site, calm the skin, and help the healing process begin — naturally.
This isn’t a new formula. We've been making it for over 30 years. It’s a tried, tested, and much-loved remedy, passed between friends, families and travellers. We’ve seen it help with midges, mozzies, sandflies, grass ticks, and even bee stings. And we’ve heard countless stories of it saving the day on adventures around Australia, on Kimberley cruises and even in Peru!
Apply it as soon as possible after the bite — then reapply frequently over the next few days. The earlier and more often, the better.

Apply frequently until bites have healed. Can be used in conjunction with Herbal Skin Calm- another useful first aid product for insect bites. A cooling soothing gel for all itchy skin conditions made from infused skin calming herbs such as chickweed, chamomile, nettle, plantain and witch hazel. This gel is useful for any situation when itchiness is driving you mad – eczema, prickly heat, psoriasis, chicken pox, and multiple insect bites.
For full protection from bites, pair Midgie Magic with our all-natural Pestoff Spray – a botanical insect repellent made in Broome.
Want a gentle cleanser for the outdoors? Try our Broome Bug Soap, made with essential oils to calm irritated skin and ward off biting insects.
Yes – it’s safe for use on children 6 months and older. Always do a patch test first if your child has sensitive skin. A little goes a long way.
Yes, but avoid during first trimester, and then after only on isolated spots just to be safe (pregnant and breastfeeding mums haven't been researched hugely) – Midgie Magic is made with gentle, natural ingredients. If unsure, consult your healthcare provider.
Absolutely! Feedback has indicated Midgie Magic is effective against mosquito bites, sandfly bites, ant bites, grass ticks and even mild nettle stings. Works also on bee stings and even, so we are told, on Scottish midgies! Please note that an unlucky few will have severe reactions to midge bites, requiring medical attention and anti-histamines.
Midgie Magic is best on bites. Okay on a bit of broken skin but otherwise use our Healing Cream which is a great wound healer and can be applied to open wounds or heavily scratched areas. Stop and rinse well if there is any adverse reaction at all (though we have never heard of this happening).
Most people feel relief within minutes. It is important to apply the cream as soon as possible to bites, and reapply frequently for several days until swellings have disappeared. It's gentle enough to use several times a day.
No, it absorbs quickly and leaves your skin soft without any greasy residue. A little goes a long way.
