Midgie Magic – Herbal Bite Relief with 30+ Years of Plant Wisdom

In the late 1990s, Ali developed a humble little remedy for midge bites. Back then, it was called Sandfly Salve - a name knew among locals or backpackers who passed through Broome and swore by its soothing magic. As our range grew and the feedback poured in, we gave it a new name to match its magic reputation: Midgie Magic.

Lovingly hand crafted by us, this bite balm has been trusted for over 30 years and is still handmade the traditional way - with heart, herbs, and a whole lot of know-how.

🌿 Rooted in Traditional Bush Remedies

Midgie Magic draws on the wisdom of herbal medicine and bush apothecary traditions, blending time-tested plants known for their soothing and skin-healing properties.

Inside each jar you’ll find a little bit of magic:

  • Calendula – for skin repair and inflammation

  • Plantain – a traditional bush herb that draws and calms

  • Lavender & Chamomile – to reduce redness and promote healing

  • Aloe Vera – for cooling and comfort

  • Kunzea (Tick Bush) – a uniquely Australian oil known for its powerful anti-inflammatory and antibacterial benefits

These ingredients work in harmony to reduce itchiness, disinfect the bite site, calm the skin, and help the healing process begin - naturally.

🌿 We are Experts in Tropical Insect Survival

This isn’t a new formula. We've been making it for over 30 years. It’s a tried, tested, and much-loved remedy, passed between friends, families and travellers. We’ve seen it help with midges, mozzies, sandflies, grass ticks, and even bee stings. And we’ve heard countless stories of it saving the day on adventures around Australia, on Kimberley cruises and even in Peru!

Apply it as soon as possible after the bite — then reapply frequently over the next few days. The earlier and more often, the better.

🌿 Why People Love Midgie Magic:

  • Fast-acting, plant-based relief

  • Safe for kids and gentle on sensitive skin

  • Non-greasy balm that travels well

  • Made in very small batches in Broome with care and intention using ethical, sustainable ingredients

  • Completely free from harsh chemicals, fillers, or synthetic fragrances

Apply frequently until bites have healed. Can be used in conjunction with Herbal Skin Calm- another useful first aid product for insect bites. A cooling soothing gel for all itchy skin conditions made from infused skin calming herbs such as chickweed, chamomile, nettle, plantain and witch hazel. This gel is useful for any situation when itchiness is driving you mad – eczema, prickly heat, psoriasis, chicken pox, and multiple insect bites.

For full protection from bites, pair Midgie Magic with our all-natural Pestoff Spray – a botanical insect repellent made in Broome.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Is Midgie Magic safe for children?

Yes – it’s safe for use on children 6 months and older. Always do a patch test first if your child has sensitive skin. A little goes a long way.

Can I use it while pregnant or breastfeeding?

Yes, but avoid during first trimester, and then after only on isolated spots just to be safe (pregnant and breastfeeding mums haven't been researched hugely) – Midgie Magic is made with gentle, natural ingredients. If unsure, consult your healthcare provider.

Does it help with other bites or stings?

Absolutely! Feedback has indicated Midgie Magic is effective against mosquito bites, sandfly bites, ant bites, grass ticks and even mild nettle stings. Works also on bee stings and even, so we are told, on Scottish midgies! Please note that an unlucky few will have severe reactions to midge bites, requiring medical attention and anti-histamines.

Can I use it on broken skin?

Midgie Magic is best on bites. Okay on a bit of broken skin but otherwise use our Healing Cream which is a great wound healer and can be applied to open wounds or heavily scratched areas. Stop and rinse well if there is any adverse reaction at all (though we have never heard of this happening).

How long does the relief last?

Most people feel relief within minutes. It is important to apply the cream as soon as possible to bites, and reapply frequently for several days until swellings have disappeared. It's gentle enough to use several times a day.

Is it greasy or sticky?

No, it absorbs quickly and leaves your skin soft without any greasy residue. A little goes a long way.

You just can't go wrong.

The most effective thing. I've been using it my whole life. My mum would put it on me as a baby and child. Between my big family, the midgie magic and Pestoff last us quite a while. A little goes a long way.

THE BEST THING!!!!

Midgie Magic is literally THE BEST thing I’ve ever tried - for anything and everything!!!!!!!!!
I have been travelling for years full time and run into all sorts of insects, cuts, splinters etc. I have three jars on my at all times - a large one in my car, another one by the bed and a small one in my handbag.
I literally no longer worry about how I will react to the next bug we come across - as I know midge magic will help take the itch away and calm it instantly!!
I tell EVERY PERSON I meet on the road about it now - and I mean EVERYONE 🤣
Thank you - thank you for making the ONLY product on the market that actually works 💕🫶🥰

From red welts to bites disappearing

My little one was bitten around 10 times on her forearm and they came up in huge red welts. As soon as I noticed them I immediately reached for the Midgie Magic. After only one application the bites went down, after two applications they completely stopped itching and after reapplying around 2/3 times a day, in 3 days the bites were completely gone. I take this everywhere! Absolute life saver!

Honest Review: Midgie Magic Bite Relief Cream

We camp on Moreton Island a lot and the sandflies always bite me — I seem to be their favourite! I’ve tried plenty of things over the years, but Midgie Magic Bite Relief Cream is the one I keep coming back to.

I’ve used this cream before and it definitely works. As soon as I put it on, it gives instant relief and stops that crazy itch, which means I don’t keep scratching. After that, the bites just seem to disappear on their own instead of hanging around for days.

It’s easy to apply, not greasy, and it’s now a permanent part of my camping kit. If you’re heading anywhere with sandflies or midgies, I’d absolutely recommend having this with you.
